Will the treatment hurt?
Generally, chiropractic treatment does not hurt. Most patients feel an immediate relief of pain and increased feeling of well-being. There can be some minor short- term discomfort that quickly passes for most patients. My treatment approach is particularly gentle. See Our Treatments page for further information.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic treatment is very safe and has far fewer risks than many other treatments for your problem, such as medication and surgery. I am fully qualified and registered with the General Chiropractic Council and I am a member of the United Chiropractic Association. My approach is particularly gentle and the treatment will be tailored to your specific needs depending on any risk factors that are identified before treatment commences.
Is it safe for pregnant women, babies and the elderly?
Yes. I will only use safe, gentle techniques that are suitable for your age and condition.
Will x-rays be taken?
I may suggest that x-rays are taken if it is clinically necessary and will discuss the reasons with you if they are appropriate for you to have. If so, I will refer you privately to have them taken.
How long will it take to work?
It depends on your particular condition, its severity and your response to treatment. The longer that you have been suffering with symptoms, the longer it can take to get better. I will advise you at your Report of Findings of your own likely recovery time, and how to minimise the chances of problems happening again.
Do I need to see my GP first?
Chiropractic training prepares practitioners to recognise conditions which are not appropriate for chiropractic treatment, so it is safe for you to go directly to a chiropractor without having to see your GP first. This is part of the purpose of the initial consultation, to ensure that there is nothing else going on which may warrant referring you back to your GP or to any other appropriate specialist.
Can anyone call themselves a chiropractor?
No. The General Chiropractic Council (GCC) is a statutory body that regulates the profession and it is illegal for anyone in the UK to use the title ‘chiropractor’ or to imply that they are a chiropractor unless they are fully registered with the GCC. I have undergone 5 years full-time study to qualify and become registered with the GCC.
Will I need to get undressed for treatment?
Chiropractors work holistically and prefer to see the whole spine as they treat. Therefore I do ask patients to undress to their underwear. You can tell me if you would rather remain clothed and I will be happy to accommodate you. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and comfortable at all times.
